As climate change becomes increasingly severe, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing carbon absorption have become top priorities for many countries. With its diverse ecosystems and extensive forest coverage, Vietnam is emerging as a bright spot with the potential to become one of the world's largest carbon sinks.

Vietnam’s carbon credit market
A carbon credit is a tradable certificate or permit that allows the holder to emit one metric ton of CO₂ or an equivalent amount of another greenhouse gas.
Vietnam’s carbon credit market began to take shape more than 20 years ago, initially focusing on areas such as renewable energy and biogas. According to data from the World Bank, by 2023, Vietnam had issued over 42 million carbon credits certified by international organizations such as Verra, Gold Standard, or under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. Each credit was valued at between 3 and 5 USD, generating millions of dollars in revenue for individual projects.
Today, Vietnam’s carbon market is entering a more mature stage of development, with analysts noting the rising quality of credits and significantly higher prices, supported by the gradual establishment of a legal framework and the country’s commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2050.

Agriculture and Forestry: A key opportunity
Mr. Tran Quang Minh, CEO of Carbon Credits Vietnam, noted that the country can leverage its strengths in agriculture and forestry to become a major global carbon sink. Projects related to afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR) are increasingly attracting interest from international tech companies, with average carbon credit prices reaching 20 USD — four times the payment levels offered by the World Bank under the REDD+ mechanism for each ton of CO₂ reduced.
Challenges and opportunities
Developing carbon credit projects is complex, requiring strict compliance with international standards and a lengthy process that can take two to three years. Nevertheless, with significant potential in ecosystems such as mangrove forests, peatlands, and tropical rainforests, Vietnam has a major opportunity to contribute to global emission reduction goals and sustainable development.
