Differentiating Inspection, Verification, and Calibration of Machinery and Equipment

In the field of machinery and equipment, terms such as inspection, verification, and calibration are often used to refer to services that evaluate and ensure the quality of machinery and equipment. However, these services have different scopes and purposes. So how are these services different?

1.        Inspection of machinery and equipment

Inspection of machinery and equipment is the process of checking, evaluating, and ensuring that the machinery and equipment meet the technical, safety, quality, and legal regulations required. The inspection process includes checking the appearance, operation, documentation, and technical specifications of machinery and equipment. This process is carried out by certified and experienced inspection experts in the field.

 2.      Verification of machinery and equipment

Verification of machinery and equipment is the process of periodic checking to ensure that the machinery and equipment still meet the technical and quality requirements. The verification process includes checking the technical specifications and components of machinery and equipment. For machinery and equipment used in the production environment, regular verification helps ensure that the machinery and equipment operate correctly and safely during use.

Technical safety verification is the operation of checking, testing, and analyzing testing units according to verification regulations to assess the safety status of equipment according to technical standards or technical regulations. Technical safety verification of machinery and equipment is a mandatory requirement for all enterprises as stipulated in Circular No. 36/2019/TT-BLDTBXH dated December 30, 2019.

3.      Calibration of machinery and equipment

This is done by comparing the measured values with a predetermined standard. When the measured value does not match the standard value, the machinery, and equipment need to be calibrated.

Cases where calibration of machinery and equipment is necessary to include:

• New machinery and equipment: In this case, calibration is performed to determine the initial accuracy of the machinery and equipment.
• Used machinery and equipment: When machinery and equipment have been used for a long time, their accuracy may decrease. Therefore, calibration is usually performed to ensure that the machinery and equipment still achieve reliable accuracy.
• After changing or repairing machinery and equipment: In this case, calibration is also performed to determine the accuracy of the machinery and equipment after it has been changed or repaired.
• During testing and maintenance: During testing and maintenance, calibration is often performed to ensure that the machinery and equipment still achieve reliable accuracy.
• When required by customers or relevant regulations: In some cases, customers may request calibration to ensure the accuracy of machinery and equipment. In addition, some legal regulations may require periodic calibration of machinery and equipment to ensure safety and product quality.
